THE IDEA

The compound consists of 4 levels. The first three levels (530 m2) are occupied by a multi-purpose entertainment venue, while the traditional lodging is set on the first floor and consists of four big rooms and a patio.
The recreational venue houses: a big coffee house, a library with 1,200 books about the Mediterranean architectural tradition (starting from pre-industrialist era), a collection 2,500 CDs with music from all over the Mediterranean, while 1,100 vinyl discs add to the music experience, a permanent photo exhibition, a collection of 110 marble sculpture artifacts from the island of Tinos. In the basement there a big room which offers the possibility of organizing movie screenings choosing from our 2,500 titles in our film archive.
The offered services are those of big coffee shops, that is, offering a variety of coffees, fresh juices, pastry, ice-cream, snacks and delicacies, drinks and wine from Mantinia and Nemea.
On our website you will find information about book presentations, concerts, theatrical plays, film screenings, food and wine tasting as well as our opening hours.
Information Centre for Architecture and Music in the Mediterranean and Marble Crafts of Tinos
From Great Mantinia of Messinia to Levidi of Mantinia, Arcadia and then to the Mediterranean. The original idea was a journey destined for places and knowledge. We picked out the journey to the Mediterranean because we are Greeks and we never stopped this journey. The Mediterranean is our native land.
The desire for progress as well as the aspiration to repeat the Greek travelling and cultural experience was an obligation for the creators of this centre. Odysseys’ roaming is the root of our cultural identity. We know the limits of our aspirations. Time is long (since the 5th millennium B.C. until today), the knowledge is vast and the Mediterranean is the most studied civilization ever in History. The Mediterranean is the mother of history, of knowledge and of creation. The Mediterranean is considered to be the theatre of the greatest cultural exchanges, of multinational empires, of multinational religious currents, of the first cities. It’s not only the mother-country of three monotheistic religions but also the mother-country of democracy, city and law. It also served as a bridge to transfer ideas and people from Africa, Asia and Europe.
We picked out music and architecture in order to exceed all the linguistic restrictions and to favour communication with all senses, with all possibilities, for every visitor of every nationality. We chose sound and picture – design because they don’t have to be translated in order to understand them like speech and because they allow access to non- specialists. We picked out music and architecture because they can exceed ideological dogmatisms and commitments, they can allow influences , they cannot easily be monitored and censored, they can break the entrenchments of national cultures and above all, among all the other forms of communication, they can establish co-existence and intercultural action.
We wanted to create, on a local scale, a substructure that every place in Europe is obligated to create. The decentralization of knowledge and information is nowadays a much easier possibility than it was in the past. The financial aid of a European Union program was necessary in order to materialize this venture. We added many years of cooperation, a lot of travelling, studying, hearings, research and expenses. We would like to share our cultural experience with visitors, friends, research institutions and other similar institutions in Europe, educational institutions, visitors of the guest house and of course residents of the area.
The “Information Centre for Architecture and Music in the Mediterranean” does not wish to compete with other research institutions and university libraries either in size and in the administration of the material or in methodology, co operations and production. Our effort was from the very beginning extremely difficult. Instead of giving up we tried to establish ourselves. We hope that others will continue. Also, we ask for the contribution of research institutions, civilians and sponsors in order to upgrade today’s substructure.
Our future goal is to increase the volumes relating to architecture from 2,500 to 3,000 and to 4,000 music CDs, to extend netting, to organize events, to increase all publishing and educational activities, to create a digital radio station, to educate emigrants and to organize meetings and small conferences.
We would like all visitors with common interest to communicate and travel and this is the main purpose of our program. For this reason we invite friends, musicians, architects, Greeks and foreigners to share this experience with us and travel into amusement and knowledge.
