THE IDEA

In Levidi

Mantineia, in the heart of the biggest Menalon plateau, a first-class traditional lodging-recreational venue has opened its doors named MEGALI MANTINEIA – MEGALO KAFENEIO. The restored building compound that houses the lodging has been landmarked by the Ministry of Culture as it is considered as a great combination of urban landscape with traditional architectural elements that used to be found on mountain areas.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEGALI MANTINEIA

Constructing the place, which took eleven years, had its problems but also its festive moments and, due to its length, comprises a distinct period of the history of the building. The outcome is a manifestation of the craftsmen’s enthusiastic improvisation, skillfulness and gusto. Its beauty - if any - is a result of the fun, the cooperation and the feelings of deep friendship that were forged among people along the way.

THE RESTAURANT

The establishment houses a restaurant and wine cellar featuring a complete range of Peloponnesian wines, over an area of 500 sq. m. (basement, ground floor and attic). There is a selection of Greek dishes and meze plates to share, all made with organic local ingredients. Cheese and charcuterie platters, as well as homemade pies are delightfully accompanied by wine.

THE ARCHITECTURE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

Although the books are written in almost all the languages of the Mediterranean, the design, the photography, and the geometry prevail all restrictions of the language and guarantee the understanding of the architectural information. The ancient world (Egypt - Mesopotamia - Greece - Rome), the Byzantium and the Christian East (Syria- Palestine- Egypt), the Arabian world, the Ottoman Empire, the Mediaeval Southern Europe (Gothic and Roman) and the renaissance are all a first classification of the material.

THE MUSIC IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

The search and the selection of the material were done with the help of companies, musicologists and research institutions. For the Arabian traditional music the companies OCORA, INEDIT, Institut de Monde, Arab and Blue Silver were those that helped us make our choices. For the Persian music we had the help of CERESHME and NAVAL, for the Turkish music, KALAN and ADA, for Jewish and the Romany music, the NETWORK and WERGO, for the Greek music the Institute of Melpos Merlie, Simona Karra, Likeio Ellinidon, University of Crete, the folkloric Institute of Peloponnesus and the companies MINOS, EMI and LYRA.
